So, it’s been a fair few months since I’ve last decided to post… and rightfully so really. I invested a lot in myself over the last half a year, and the investment in myself was… for lack of a better word ‘rewarded’. That is to say, there were results and for a while there the positive vibes didn’t know when to stop. Two posts down from this one (I believe) shows the beginning of an exciting few months in my life. I asked her out for a drink, and we hit it off. She went home for the summer, but we spoke nearly every day and still have for the better part of five or six months. Who I am now is so very different to who I had been when I made that post in June. I feel more confident and willing to push myself further, I am more committed to everything I do. I am happier in the skin I am in than I had been for a long time. Only now, I see myself lacking outcome independence.
This is where I am fighting to stay motivated. The outcome of any scenario, this evening for example being my friend agreeing to go out tonight but then he is unavailable at the last minute, can sap my motivation at a moments notice. It sucks. Now I have to find the motivation to get up and make sure my evening isn’t a complete write off, but that is really hard at the moment. Somehow I need to make myself independent of an outcome.
I can’t work out if I don’t care whether chemicals weapons have been used or if I don’t care whether that is just a fabrication for another impending occupation. Either way, I don’t care. That isn’t to say I don’t care about the victims, those poor bastards. That’s where it ends though, I can’t do a damned thing about it and I can’t vote for or against it. My voice will literally be unheard and so I am bored of wasting my breath. Hypocrisy is writhe throughout the whole affair.
I’m going to listen to JT and care about my life and one day when all of this worldly shit rolls up at my door and asks for my opinion you bet your sweet arse I’m going to have an opinion.
…that girl at work out for a drink, but then you can’t find her. Doh!
I am going to rescue the shit out of Miller. All of my want, seriously - all of it.
Thoughtcrime is real. Without repeating myself too much, let me keep PRISM directly in front of our eyes. In George Orwell’s 1984 there existed the idea you could commit a crime just by thinking it - so the state doctored everything you knew, making you but a worshiper in the house of the state. If you thought wrong of them, they would know - because they were always watching.
Today, in the real world, the idea of Thoughtcrime isn’t as farfetched as you might think. I can’t stress enough how important it is that we don’t let PRISM slip by unheard. We can’t just shrug it off and turn back to the TV magazines. With the not-so-much-a-revelation of PRISM, we know for a fact that we are being watched and every single thing we do is converted to data and stored away. We know this for a fact because the US government has not denied it, but in fact as inferred it as real. I am, however, not American. I am British. I did not have a say in America’s politics (and nor do I ever want to.) yet now I am being directly affected. Perhaps because that affection is not tangible and physically intrusive we are happy to let it fly under the radar. So where does thoughtcrime fit into this?
Alright, place on your tinfoil hats for a minute and hear me out.
Let us (safely) assume that the data being harvested by PRISM is everything about you. The things you say, when you say them, how you say them. The clothes you buy, where you buy them, how you buy them. The things you want, why you want them, when you want them. Every minute detail that you might think harmless, collected up and turned into a readable data. Now your friends turn, all of the same applies to them. Through the GPS on your phone, PRISM now knows the routes you walk to your favourite places. You’ve just tagged everyone in the same location on facebook anyway so the GPS was irrelevant. Now, perhaps you meet with your friends for a reason, and that reason doesn’t sit well with PRISM. They know where you are, why you are there and how you got there. This is a massive breach of privacy, but not only that - they know WHY you are there. They are inside your head, they know what you are going to buy to drink, they can influence that decision. They know what you are thinking - but only because you have given them the power to do so.
You might see this as sensationalism, it might be. At this point however, the above story is not far fetched. It happens. To terrorist cells and criminals, granted. It should be no surprise you’ve been spied on - but PRISM is the collection and collaboration of this information on an unprecedented scale. They can cross reference everything you do and if anything is something they disagree with then, hey presto, you’ve committed thoughtcrime.
We’re not there just yet, but the line has been set and we’re inching closer to the day it is crossed. Of course, we’re already forgetting that you’re right now being watched. If you are visiting my tumblr page because you searched NSA or anything else, you’ve been watched. Every internet page you visit today will be logged, categorised and put on the back burner until you upset the status quo.
Well, I say bring it on. I’m ready to cross that line. Fuck being spied on. I will challenge everything that tries to subvert my life, I am will not be subordinate and accepting of my privacy being treated like nothing. I will protest, I will riot and I will continue to bring up these issues. I will not forget and I will not forgive, my privacy HAS been breached and I will commit all the thoughtcrime I can. My governments have wronged me, and foreign governments have wronged me. My trust has been depleted. Please, people of the internet - do not forgive, and do not forget. We are only just beginning.
"The Humans in other countries follow different cultures and ideals. They are completely unrelatable, they aren’t us.”
WRONG. They are us and we are them, just because the mans tells us to fire the trigger does not make them alien and impossible to understand.
"Terrorists cannot be forgiven for their crimes!”
But you unconditionally forgive your brave heroes and your suited leaders for their atrocities and crimes - they reap and sew terror on foreign shores on an hourly basis under the cheap guise of Democracy.
"It’s not all bad, we have much better lives than most.”
If our society is the only comparison, then perhaps. But what about tribes untouched by modern societies? Their lives are lived within themselves without outside influence, they don’t care for the internet and daily soap opera. Their lives are better, because I bet my last penny they are happier human beings.
If the size of our television, our rovers on mars, the state of our roads and the money in our wallets are the only barometer for if our lives as human beings is satisfactory or not then we are already failing ourselves. I feel… I almost know, these are in fact FALSE barometers. These are unnatural states. We should want more from ourselves, not our belongings and constructed environment. We should know that we are killing and stunting ourselves and fight tooth and nail against it. A higher plane of thinking is required by all, and exposures of government secrecy is one step towards it. We are barred from levels of thought because they are against the grain and no one wants to go against the grain. Ask why and how of everything and never take no for an answer, do not flinch away from the truth and always endeavor for it. Endeavor for MORE. Don’t settle for the first answer and the easiest - look further, look deeper and think longer and think harder. For all of us.
They will listen to your calls and read your messages. They will read your emails and your private messages. They will view your images and take your work. They will store all this in a big file called “Your name here” and keep them for themselves. You are a suspect, you are guilty until proven innocent. And that is just the beginning. The NSA and their supposed Prism, along with GCHQ are watching you, waiting for you to slip up. Why are they watching you? because you are the enemy. PRISM wouldn’t exist if you were not a threat to them, but you are and they need to keep tabs on you. They have, and will continue to, use terrorism as the scapegoat for PRISM and other such surveillance against us. They will convince you that PRISM is for them and us, protecting us from an outside threat that they are creating. Terrorism is a cyclical anomaly. Terrorism comes in many different forms and is not the anonymous, causeless act of violence that they would have you believe.
Imagine, for a moment, you have been living your life in devotion to the state. As you most likely have. Most days you will work your arse off waiting for your day off, in which you will more often than not be fatigued from your 40+ hours a week. Work doesn’t begin when you swipe in. It begins the moment you wake up, you get in the shower, you make yourself something to eat and then the commute. Then you have your allocated shift and then the commute back, upon where you make yourself something to eat and you might jump in the shower and then climb into bed. Then you will do it all again tomorrow. Now imagine, this has all been observed, without your permission. Every scrap of data that is possible to be obtained from that day will have been. The messages you sent, the words you spoke on the phone. The websites you might have visited, when you visited them - and all the correlations of such will form your IDEA. Your thought pattern. They are inside your head, and now they have the ability to change that thought by pointing you in different directions with subtle advertisements, spam emails, text messages, consumer phone-calls. They are completely in control of your life. The apathy of “I haven’t done anything wrong.” has flown out of the window. Everything you do is something that they want to know and it isn’t their business to know.
Now imagine, all of this has happened in other countries. Suddenly, they arrive and impose themselves on your culture. Your family, and your friends family are attacked, raped and murdered. This happens on a daily basis and is covered up by the same people that push their noses into your life. They give you the information that you see on a daily basis so as to make you unaware of the truth. The Vietnam war was all but ended on the basis of one photo. That photo depicted the horrors that YOURS and MINE government forced upon the Vietnamese people. These same atrocities continue in other foreign countries TO THIS DAY. Only these photos are filtered out long before they ever reach us. Though they are there to be seen, we are kept ignorant by them. It is these people that come to our shores and bring “terror” to our streets because it is the only way for them to fight back. In reality, it is the government that is inviting these people into our homes and standing idly by as they attack us for THEIR crimes. Lee Rigby, chopped up on the streets of Woolwich, Christopher Dorner, shot down by his colleagues for whose crimes he protested, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev taken from the public eye and martial law paraded through the streets of Boston in retaliation. All of this uncertainty and yet, the government is privy to every aspect of your life that you can imagine. And more. The 1960’s - during the cold war, governments worked on strange and new ways to go about covert operations and new ways of thinking. Things that would be hard to understand now. So let us suppose that the governments continue to work on strange programs that we would struggle to wrap our minds around now and that PRISM is just the base of the mountain and there is a very long way to go.
PRISM should be the invite to start the climb of that mountain and for us all to ascend to it’s peak. To reclaim it as ours. They know what they are going to do, and how they are going to do it to us. When they are going to do it. So my question to all of us is, are we going to do anything to stop them? Or are we going to stare bleakly into our future knowing it HAS already been predetermined, not by fate or by fortune, but by a group of men who have become drunk by the power of treating us all like lemmings. Where we do draw the line, when do we draw the line?
